Greetings all!

I am currently pursuing a MA in Art Education. I anticipate graduating in 5/2009. Right now I am student teaching and realizing that this may not be what I want to do for the rest of my life.  I feel stuck in a way because I've spent all of this time and money devoted to a career that I feel now may not be the best fit for me. I'm not sure what to do. I enjoy helping people and have thought about going in the direction of working for non profit. I need help finding a way to use both of my degrees ( BFA in Animation & MA in Art Education ) So that I don't feel like I just wasted the last 8 years of my life....any advice is appreciated.

Hi Joan,

I just had a meeting with the graduate admissions program at my University, and something they told me is: you can't dabble in graduate school.  I guess this doesn't help you so much since you're already immersed in a program, but you may want to explore the different options within your area of study right now.  Talk to professors and professionals to see if there's a world outside of teaching which may be an option (like one-on-one teaching, or consulting.)  Are there other areas of Art Education which you haven't experienced?  If so, do an internship or look into whether it might interest you.  If not, why bother continuing the program if you're sure it's not for you?

I've just stopped my current path after determining it wasn't for me, and am committed to trying other options out as best I can to see if I like them.  When I find a better fit, I can go back to school if I need to at that point.  But, speaking from experience, there's no point continuing something you know you're not passionate about just because you've already started the path...in the end you'll either be unhappy or end up switching anyway and will have spent more time and money in the process.

Hope this helps.

Kate

Hi Joan,

I'm in the same boat you are, except I have two worthless degrees in Vocal Performance. I've thought about Arts Administration as well, although I'm a bit of an introvert and am not confident in my communication skills. I went to my career advisor at the University I'm attending and she gave me lots of information on how to transfer the skills I've aquired to an administration resume. If you're interested in helping people, you could always go into Education/Outeach in Arts Administration. Don't worry, you're not the only one who feels like they've waisted the last 8 years of their life...I feel the exact same way:) I honestly wish I had gone into Art, because at least I would have a skill that is transferable in the business world. You should use your creativity and don't be afraid to embelish your resume with all the experience you've gained in your education. Start looking at places you would like to live and look into job opportunities that require design, marketing, etc.. You can even look at University websites(they have great benefits and full time positions available all the time) It will seem daunting, but don't give up, there's a place for you somewhere in the world!

Best wishes,

Lori

Hi Joan,

What is it about your current direction that has made you decide it is not the best fit for you?

Joan,

I feel for you.  At the end of my M.L.S. I took the Myers-Briggs at the career counselors office and the counselor said I should be in business because I'm the type of person that wants to make a lot of money--yada-yada.  I freeked.  I went into library science never found my ideal job, got into customer service and sales and now I make as much as my first library job, 11 year ago.  I say focus on the animation and move to LA but have your money ready, which might mean being a teacher for a minute while you save up.

Also, the most insulting job interview that I ever had, was when I interviewed for a development assistant and they offered me 15,000 this was like 5 years ago.  The development director almost broke down in tears because she knew the director made 70K (and is married to a man making over 100K) and she felt that I should be paid more, and they just couldn't keep good help.  It all depends of course on where you live.  I unfortunately live in a poorer part of the country and before the national enconomy tanked our economy tanked so, my options have been limited for years.

Best of luck to you.  I high recommend two things: prayer, asking other people who care about you to pray for you and creating a reverse pyramid goal sheet with your goal at the top and then you work you way backwards.  Also, do not let your connection to your significant other, friends or family keep you from moving to another part of the country.  I am amazed a the number of unemployed people that I have met (especially the young, single ones) who bitch and moan about not having a job, but won't leave their families and dead end towns to get their dream job.

Thats's my two cents.
