Hi Lizzy,
I don't know if you will ever read this, but I think it's interesting that 52 people read your email, but didn't reply. I will help you in anyway I can, as I need help myself. I think that if music is your passion you should definitelyl pursue it. You need to make a living, so why don't you try getting paid for your passion after your work hours, while holding down your job. If your off hour gig does well, then quit. I know what you mean about insomnia. I believe if you do what you like on the side, your insomnia would go away. I will pray for you that it does also. If you'd like, we could keep in touch after you reply.
I am originally from the States, but am living in the UK now. I am trying to get out of the 'office' grind. I am probably much older than you, but none the wiser when it comes to finding a career or self-business in the creative field.
You have the advertising industry experience, why don't you try working as a Sales Rep for a music manufacturer? I tell you this, only because I have a friend of mine who happened to fall into a Rep position with Fender Guitars. Some of the big guys at the top have seen how he works and the sort of person he is and are now grooming him to take over a high management position when the CEO or Executive VP retires.
Just wanted to suggest another avenue for you. Music promotions for a major record label or growing one might be another option to look at too.
Your unhappiness will transfer onto your job through performance and attitute and will be noticiable. It could cause problems with your current job- it has in my past jobs. You need to do something to bring you closer to your desires. I agree with the prior post of doing something afterhours until you can get a job. Also, volunteering at some function in your industry will give you the experience all jobs require. Consider all avenues with your music...if you have children you can volunteer at their school in the music department, get help from family and friends through their contacts. Not sure if you write or play music, or some other avenue, but develop some goals and work towards them.
